As the “Mother of all Caravans” picks up steam and heads straight for our southern border, President Trump is still making concessions and playing nice with immigration advocates in Washington and Mexico. If ever there was a time to prove how serious he is about protecting our nation from illegal immigrants, drug smugglers, and terrorists, that time is now. Instead we got more empty promises, more wavering and waffling instead of meaningful action.
The president had previously claimed he would shut down the border to stem the tide of mass illegal immigration coming from Mexico. His supporters waited with baited breath to see if it would be different this time, with Trump following through on his tough border security stance. Unfortunately he showed once again that he’d rather walk back his previous words instead of facing harsh criticism from his opponents.
During a meeting at the White House on Thursday, the president said “Mexico understands that we’re going to close the border or I’m going to tariff the cars. I’ll do one or the other and probably start off with the tariffs. That will be a very powerful incentive because Mexico has the strongest immigration laws anywhere in the world”.
“I don’t play games,” he added, “I’ll do it.”
Responding to a reporter’s question, he claimed there has already been a big improvement, despite recent numbers showing the largest immigration waves in our country’s history. “We’ll start with the tariffs and see what happens. But they are removing people out of Mexico, on the way up to the United States, and if you take a look, you’ll see a big difference,” he said.
The main problem with staking out an extreme position and then walking it back, is that it emboldens democrats and other open borders activists, who begin to understand that the president is not serious about taking action. At the same time it demoralizes his own base, weakening their motivation to stand behind him with strong support. The strategy may work in business negotiations but it’s a failure when you are dealing with political zealots who are determined to flood the U.S. with non-white immigrants at any cost. In our current situation, we are at emergency levels of immigration, and each day that the border remains open adds thousands of new aliens who immediately begin soaking up our strained public resources, and settling in for a lifetime of easy welfare living at taxpayer expense. Once here, they will never leave unless forcibly removed. It’s long past time to station the military at our border to put an immediate end to the plans of these invading foreign soldiers.
